Welcome Sunday - September 12

Happy New Year!
Celebrating the Seasons of Good Samaritan.

Join us for a special welcome on Sunday, September 12.
We’re kicking off our 2010–2011 program year for children, youth and adults.
This will be a time for everyone (whether a long-time member or a more recent arrival) to get to know each other better and to think about what the new year offers. Here’s what’s
planned for the day.

MORNING: Worship services at 9:00 and 10:30 AM will both be in the Sanctuary with music provided by a guest trumpeter, organist Carol Hipps and our Chancel Choir led by Clinton Smith. We will begin to explore the theme “Every Member in Ministry.” Nursery care for infants through age 2 and Sunday School for children age 3–grade 6 will be offered at 9:00 and 10:30 AM. Sunday School for youth in grades 7–12 will be at 10:30 AM. (The Adult Book Study class will begin meeting on September 19.)

This year, consider joining others who are deepening their faith development by committing to spending Sunday morning at Good Samaritan. Families can worship together one hour, attend or teach Sunday School the other hour and connect with and make new friends in-between. Like many things in life, our spiritual returns are proportional to our investment! It is also a good time to think about joining one of our musical groups or helping out with the things that make Good Samaritan UMC a special place.

AFTERNOON: A festive party introduces us to the coming year. Come anytime between 3:30-6:30 PM to the upper level parking lot for “Happy New Year – Celebrating the Seasons of Good Samaritan.” It’s a FREE event to bring our Good Samaritan Church family of all ages and stages together to celebrate a Happy New Year!

Food and activity stations will follow the themes of fall, winter, spring and summer. There will be bobbing for apples, sledding, egg relays, hula hoops and more! Learn of the exciting plans for each of these seasons and listen to Bob and the Beachcombers, who will perform music for all the seasons. Bring a chair or blanket and introduce a friend to your church home!

If you CLICK NOW you can download a flyer about this event.  Why not print some copies to share with your friends and neighbors.

Fall Sunday School Teachers Needed!

We are looking to add to our amazing Sunday School team for the fall of 2010–2011. We have an excellent core group of experienced teachers, but have had many teachers move on from teaching this year. Please seriously consider joining us as a teacher. You might be surprised how fulfilling working with kids can be! The curriculum is easy to learn and engaging and you will have tons of support! Let's keep this excellent program for our children strong and growing!

Age groupings are:
     3/4-year olds
     5/Kindergarten
     1/2 grade
     3/4 grade
     5/6 grade

Please contact Heather@good.org to volunteer.

Adult Volunteers

Adult volunteers are needed in a variety of ways in our youth ministry programs.  Consider joining us for a one-time event, teaching a youth Sunday School class, being a Confirmation mentor, or being a part of the BUZZ or SYF youth group on Sunday or Wednesday nights.  Prayerfully consider your own personal gifts, talents and interests and then contact Jean Elliott at jean@good.org for more information.

Summer Choir

Join in singing with our last Summer Choir performance on the Sunday, August 29. Just come to the choir room at 8:00 AM to learn the piece, and have a little singing fun. All singers, sorta singers, and singing wannabes are invited. If you have questions, please contact Music Coordinator Gavin Berg at gavin@good.org.
On August 29, we will also have a fall kick-off lunch and rehearsal for the Chancel Choir. If you are thinking about joining the adult choir, try us out this summer!

Quantity needed is enough to serve about 15 people (as a meal). If you are able to provide soup or bread, please contact Becky or Dan right away. Soup and bread can be made in advance and frozen before use.

New Mission Opportunites

Check out these NEW Mission Opportunities  to serve either Nationally or Internationally.

Water Sanitation in Kenya

We have an opportunity to help fund a water sanitation system at the Ndikwe School in the Murang’s District of Kenya.  The entire cost of the project is $15,000, but a number of different congregations are working with Church World Service to raise the money.

The system would provide a safe source of drinking water as well as a latrine system, particularly providing separate facilities for girls.  Currently, there are no separate facilities for girls, and as a result, girls are not attending school.

In addition to this sanitation system, parents are also working on a much larger project that includes other improvements to the building, purchase of equipment, fencing, and a peer training program to improve self-esteem and conflict resolution.

If you are willing to make a donation to this program, please indicate “Kenyan Water” on your check, and the Missions Committee will match the first $500 with money you helped raise at the Rummage Sale.

We’d like to conclude our fundraising effort by September 1, and we’ll be able to facilitate communication between our children and the children at the Ndikwe School in the fall.

Musical Instrument Drive - Eagle Scout Service Drive

Do you have a musical instrument, for either band or orchestra, that you have been meaning to donate to a great cause? For his Eagle Scout service project, Good Samaritan youth Martin Kulstad has taken on the project of obtaining instruments for Sanford Middle School in south Minneapolis, where there is great need for instruments in good condition. Ninety out of 100 students rent instruments from the school and many of these instruments are almost 50 years old. Please consider this the time to pass on music to the next generation. Martin will be happy to pick up your instrument and deliver it to the school for you. You can email Martin at martin.kulstad@gmail.com. He and his fellow scouts are hoping to make many young musicians very happy as school begins this fall.

Become a Good Sam Fan!

Good Samaritan is entering the social media age! We have a Facebook page (Good Samaritan UMC) that we are in the process of developing. If you are a Facebook user, please become a fan (be sure you have located the correct Good Samaritan—you’ll see our logo as well as our location) and participate in the discussions related to our postings. Currently we have 78 fans. The youth have had their own Facebook page for quite awhile, so if you have youth in your family, encourage them to become a part of that group. Jean Elliott helps to manage the content and keeps the privacy settings high. In addition, our post-high school young adults under 30 also have their own page.

Artist Among Us

We know you are out there! The Library Committee wants your art on our wall. We are continuing to promote our Good Samaritan artists. Come to the church library and see “Fish of Fortune,” a beautiful creation stitched by Lu VanBenthuysen. We would like to continue to present works throughout the year, recognizing the Artists Among Us. Just about any kind of art is welcome. Contact Vicki Dunn or Ann Kightlinger of the Library Committee if you have a piece you would like to display. Get your talent out of the closet and become an Artist Among Us!
