Hearts of Hope

Hearts of Hope is a spiritually-based support group for parents, families, and friends of GLBT persons where everyone will feel safe and welcome. Maybe a family member or friend has revealed him or herself to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The revelation of your loved one’s sexual orientation or gender identity can bring up a range of responses. Some people find themselves repressing their feelings while others may be flooded by over-whelming emotions. One common experience is the need for a period of adjustment to come to a new understanding and relationship with your loved one.

Human beings are communal creatures. We seek out trustworthy companions for support during times of significant, life-altering change. Telling one’s story can be helpful for both the listener and the storyteller. It can also be a spiritually significant process, especially as we consider our stories in light of our faith traditions and religious beliefs. Monthly meetings are held in the Fireside Room at Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church in Golden Valley. We meet on the first Monday of the month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. A Hearts of Hope gathering includes light refreshments, an opening reflection, occasional presentations related to understanding and acceptance, and small groups discussion for support and sharing led by trained facilitators. Our facilitators have personal experience with loving someone who has come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. This is a place where people can talk about fears, questions, and issues related to acceptance of GLBT persons at home, within faith communities, and in the wider society. We offer a place to listen to stories of acceptance and struggle; a space to share experiences and perspectives; a time to learn to support each other in journeys of hope and faith.

Anyone is welcome to join the group at any time. For further information on Hearts of Hope, call 763-545-0239 or go online Hearts of Hope.
