Appalachia Service Project Trip 2009 Saturday, June 13-Sunday, June 21 Magoffin Co., Kentucky Good Samaritan UMC will be sending 35 youth and adult volunteers on its 31st annual trip with ASP to assist in home repairs. Each year about 15,000 volunteers from across the United States participate with ASP in assisting in home repairs to 400-500 families in need. These projects range from roofing, flooring, shoring up foundations, and digging drainage ditches, to making rooms or homes wheel-chair accessible and other ways to help make homes warmer, drier, or safer. In addition to learning how to do various home repairs, ASP is also a relational ministry for both the families and the volunteers. Everyone finds ways to contribute to the work being done on the homes as well as forming meaningful relationships with family members and one another. Everyone finds something outside their comfort zone, and that is part of what provides the wonderful opportunity to open our eyes and hearts a bit wider to the world we are called to love and serve. |
